Meet the Maker: Good Grain LTD

How did Good Grain begin?

Building on our woodworking expertise from crafting traditional bellyboards, we’ve expanded into creating bespoke wooden products and signage for businesses using similar techniques. This opportunity grew from enquiries into laser work and screen-printing projects alongside our bellyboards. We’re also passionate about working with wood and pretty good at it and saw an opportunity to provide a sustainable alternative for businesses looking for high-quality, eco-friendly products. Diversifying in this way allows us to apply our skills in new areas while maintaining a steady workflow throughout the year.

How does being based in Cornwall shape your business ethos and the products you create?

Being in Cornwall deeply influences our ethos and products. Surrounded by a rich surf culture and stunning landscapes, we’re inspired to create sustainable, high-quality wooden boards and products that celebrate traditional craftsmanship. Our connection to the ocean drives our commitment to using responsibly sourced materials and minimizing waste.

How do you keep things sustainable in the workshop?

The majority of our bespoke wooden products are made from Birch plywood sheet material. We source all of our Baltic Birch plywood, supplied by Latvijas Finieris, a company committed to sustainability. The plywood is sourced from responsibly managed forests in Latvia, Finland, Estonia, and Lithuania, certified by both the FSC and PEFC for environmental and social responsibility. We chose them for their dedication to quality and eco-friendly practices, including their recent development of a renewable bio-adhesive for even more sustainable plywood. This partnership helps us ensure our products meet the highest sustainability standards while delivering superior quality.

Can you talk us through the creative process, working with clients on bespoke pieces, from idea to finished product?

Our bespoke process starts with understanding the client’s vision, discussing ideas, materials, and design elements. Once finalised, we move into production, using traditional woodworking, laser cutting, and screen printing. Throughout, we stay in close contact to ensure everything meets expectations. The most rewarding part is seeing an idea come to life in the finished piece.

How do you balance creating functional items with creativity?

We see functionality and creativity as going hand in hand. Every product we make, whether a bellyboard, custom sign, or bespoke wooden piece, needs to serve its purpose while also being beautifully crafted. We stay true to traditional woodworking techniques that ensure durability and performance while also embracing design, screen printing, and laser work to add creative elements. This balance allows us to make products that are not only practical but also unique, visually striking, and built to last.

How did you approach creating the products for our shop?

We're really proud to work with such a great organisation like the National Maritime Museum, which plays a vital role in preserving and showcasing British maritime culture. Their dedication to history and education makes it an inspiring place to be involved with.

What's your favourite part about collaborating with clients on custom pieces?

Our favourite part of collaborating on custom pieces is bringing a client’s vision to life while applying our craftsmanship and sustainable approach. We love the creative process, whether it’s designing unique signage, custom laser work, or special-edition bellyboards. Every project is an opportunity to explore new ideas, refine our techniques, and create something truly one-of-a-kind. Plus, working closely with clients often leads to great relationships and new challenges that lead to new ideas!
